This is amazing but I don’t really believe it. They say that this is her performing on the TODAY show and that this audio feed is actually what is being fed through the mic before going through some board that adjusts her pitch or some shit. I mean I’m not a record producer and it seems like it’d be possible. I am an asshole though and think this is hysterical. I watched it four times, it’s like someone clowning on singing, you know so bad you’d expect it to be coming out of a crazy person who just drank daino and is roaming the streets beeping at random people…it is so bad that it is fucking amazing…AMAZING.

Apparently, this is Beyonce’s real voice… What TV audiences heard was the pre-recorded (lip-sync) version of the song… I understand that this was just so her lips moved in time to the beat, but wow… Somewhere Etta James is rolling in her grave (oh, she’s not dead yet??)…

They use a thing called a Pitch Shifter and yes, it will make even the most pitch-iest singer in tune.

To give her some credit…another thing that can happen is that if you don’t have good monitors (speakers) firing back at you with your own voice while you’re performing, you can get the weird effect of singing and not even hearing your own voice, which will throw off your pitch horribly…that’s why Britney, Madonna etc. wear those earpieces.

This could have been happening to Beyonce and the Pitch Shifter was born to correct this…however technology has advanced so much, you could be awful and that device would correct maybe 70% of it…

Errm, this is a fake. There are such things as pitch shifters, and vocoders, but not ones that can be used live, only in the studio.
If this was her singing whilst a track for her to lip sync over was being played she would a) not be mic ed up during the performance, and b) not being belting it out so much.

Watch the video again. this is obviously her. You can tell because nobody could fake that this well. As a karaoke veteran, I can tell you that if you can’t hear yourself, and the music is too loud, then more times than not, you end up sounding like Beyonce…oops!, I mean…Sasha Fierce sounded on that tape. She obviously couldn’t hear herself, and I wish that NBC would have exended that courtesy to all of us too.

Its its an Auto tune program usually run on a Mac powered Protools rig and all these bullshit manufactured “MTV” fakes use it.

You can hear the pitch correction or track that was played to the house in the background (not reverb) but slightly delayed due to the processing time.
In NYC the IATSE unions run all the soundboards, they apparently mis-assigned Protools rig and sent the raw vocal to the master bus.

I wonder what kind of damage control Disney is going to use this time!!
Sometimes pre recorded vocals are even fed to the main mix. The drummer plays to a click track with transducers in his ears to keep in time so you don�t see headphones.

Its all bullshit, ever since MTV the marketing comes first talent is out the window. Most people who baught CDs of all these “Artists” were defrauded !!

Don Kursher, Sadaka and the f*cking Monkees did a better job on 6 tracks without the microprocessors 40 years ago !

I am an audio engineer, and I think this is hilarious. Everyone has it wrong- This is the original broadcast, but the audio has been sent through a pitch shifter(probably by the person who posted the video) with settings that actually de-tuned the vocals. Pretty funny!

By the way, there is a rack-mounted hardware version of Auto-Tune that can be used for live performances.

There is software and rack-mountable 1U units that can tune voices but in realtime, I’m not so sure how good they are. Probably you can get access to equipment that costs the moon and will pull vocals back in line to a pre-programmed pitch.

Singers will at any stage try to save their voice. Their schedules are hectic…no way any of them can do some of the intense tours and shows they have to do without wrecking their voices. What I don’t understand is why Beyonce is really going for it (albeit out of tune) when she knows she’s just gonna be lip syncing. Maybe then there is a unit there pulling the pitch back in line.

But how did you strip and detune the the vocals since the broadcast was in 2 channel. If you knock it out of phase (Thompson vocal idea) most the rest would be gone.

Yes they are rack units now..AKA “Rigs” Standard outboard for shows like SNL BTW. Trick is programming them to the click track. If a singer is really bad these “rigs” dont know the difference between minor or major….can make it worse !!!!

She has not been lip-syncing this live, or someone auto-pitching her voice, instead someone pitched this video so that her voice is horrible.
