View Full Version : Why Does Everyone Hate Nickelback?

Bong O. Boi

I'm curious why everyone hates Nickelback so much? I'll admit, musically they're a little above good, and content- wise a lot of their lyics really get to me. They seem like a pretty well grounded bunch of Canucks. Actually the only problem I have eith them is Kroeger's various choices of hairstyle.

Any thoughts, people?

You don't need a quick and witty answer when the group just simply puts out shitty music

I'm sure if any of us got rocks thrown at us onstage, we'd walk off too.

I wasn't trying to start a brawl over this, it's just one of those things I wonder about. Are there any real reasons that people hate them?

The other reply about their music sucking is just a matter of taste. I don't think their music is anything special. I mean, they're not Savatage by any means. But they're a nice little kind of heavy pop band.

I for one don't 'hate' 'em - but haven't listened through a whole album since their Roadrunner debut (The State) - and a few singles from each of the others - and I dug Kroeger's Santana cuts.
But I also have a weakness for jock rock.
Success is a bitch. Bottom line is they're a force for a reason.
I don't find them nearly as offensive as pricks like Scott Stapp, Fred Durst & Lars Ulrich - who are just so fucking douchey they turn me off to anything they produce. And come on, their shit at least rocks compared to the pop crap we're subjected to by the corporations.
But for some reason every musician I know hates on Nickelback, and I just think it's the cool thing to pull 'em down.

And bleach, imagine being fucking pelted on stage, I'd fucking walk too.

I doubt that I own any of their albums. I have a few songs downloaded, the one's I really like.

Jock rock. Never heard that term before. I'm going to use it tho.

Yeah, Stapp, Durst and Uncle Lars are sure pesky little assholes. But I love Stapp's voice, and dickhead or not, I loved Creed. But I loved Alter Bridge too. It was just good music. I liked a few of Limp Bizkit's songs, but rap- metal irritates me. And Metallica, well, I've been on their wagon since the first time I saw them in '84. St. Anger was garbage, and Lars is little prick, but I'm still going to illegally download every new album they put out.

I guess that's what I mean. The powers that be in the music are constantly feeding us tripe. They always have. But to me, Nickelback just seems to be better than the corporate shit they feed us.

I suppose that was my question. Is there any real reason to hate Nickelback, or is it just the cool thing to do?

I had to watch it again. I thought he just walked off because no one was screaming for them. Oh well.

I must admit I like a few of their songs, but I also have a weakness for bad pop music.

Their music is catchy, with good hooks that get in your brain like that bug that Kahn put in everyone's ears in Star Trek. Not a lot of musicians rave about Britney Spears talent either but she makes tons of cash. Lots of people are buying it.

Move to Canada. Their music is force fed to you like pablum is to babies. There are a lot of good bands out of Canada that never see the popularity that nickleback achieves, but to have them played constantly on every radio station here you begin to hear how much their crap sounds the same.

In Canada we are forced to hear a certain percentage of airtime devoted to Canadian talent. So if you're a station that plays current music, you're hard pressed to find current successful Canadian bands. You cycle back to Nickelback pretty quickly.
Having said that, I think we at one time called one of our major stars non-Canadian for an awared because the album in question was cut out of country and with non-Canadian back up talent. Bryan Adams I think. So, we're a bit screwy at the best of times.

I did buy Silver Side Up when it came out. Even on that album I found the songs very similar. Their next release was almost exactly the same. They found a niche and a formula and their exploiting it to the fullest. That's why I think people have a distaste for them. Sure the songs rock and the hooks stick with you, but they all end up sounding the same. How can you rave about that? You can't, you can only rant about it.

Yes postmoves. I play the guitar so if someone was throwing rocks at me on stage I would leave to. That video did not state why they suck, it just showed a large group of people who think they suck

this is why nicklebag is GARBAGE

P.s. yes lars is a complaining bitch but Metallica fucking rules (st. anger aside) out good fucking music, and changed metal/rock one they came on the scene - nicklebag fails at all of this

I got you, same hater stuff I hear from all musicians - but I continue to laugh at the 'sellout' thing. To paraphrase another asshole here in Portland (Art from Everclear) - 'Yeah, I sold out... every fucking show in every fucking stadium back in the day'. And for the supposed rebel that Kurt Cobain was, he wanted success more than anyone I've ever met - and he was recycling riffs like crazy, to the point he shot (pun intended) his wad and knew it. And a group like the Stones have a mountain of reheated garbage in their catalog behind the 'hits'.
I would never put Nickelback up against a genre defining act like Metallica.
But, that being said, I was at Metallica's early gigs @ Ruthie's Inn where they did change the landscape - huge fan then with close access. But that ship sailed and they found their 'formula' so I bored of them. Add in some shitty personalities, and I won't waste my time, or money.
I like some Nickelback stuff, but not for really breaking ground, just rock in pop is better than corp-pop we get fed - and don't begrudge anyone's success.

BleacherCreature420
07-26-2009, 11:54 AM
well said, and I will agree that rock in pop is better than corn-pop.

I love playing the guitar, but have no aspirations to "make it big" or get into a band, I play for the love of it, but I guess I hear ya on the begrudging success. I am not jealous of them, but songs like I wanna be a rockstar or whatever its called just pisses me off.

p.s. also - i don't think i mentioned anything about being a sell out -

No you didn't bring up the 'sell-out' thing, but that usually goes hand-in-hand with the recycled thing... you know, unoriginal, riff stealing/copy etc.

All good.

they are terrible...

A - his voice sounds like he's been gargling tar and glass

B - their lyrics are lackluster, generic, boring and any other clever synonyms you may have

C - the mentality they have for themselves that they're badass rockstars

but to address the original question directly... i would say that there are numerous shitty bands along the same lines as these guys, but not many are shoved down the listeners ears as much as nickleback. so the hatred for this shit is more on the forefront.

im a drummer, but i can assure you if you handed me a PRS, i could puke on the strings* and put out something better than the contrived 'rock' song "How You Remind Me"

* which would be heresy

So, basically, what I'm getting is "I can do better" from musicians, and really no other reasons than they just suck cuz they're big.

I've never gotten the "we're bad ass rockers" thing from them, although I don't really seek out interviews with them.

I seriously doubt that the guy sounds like he gargled broken glass and tar. I think that's Lemmy...but he makes it work.

Thanx to the few of you who gave serious anwers, without a bunch of hyperbole. I think my question has been answered.

The reason why I hate them is because they're simple. I haven't listened to regular radio in a couple of years thanks to an Ipod and sat radio. When I had to use a rental all I heard was "I want to be a rock star" "I like it when you go down on me" "My lady's a bad bitch" or something like that. How is any of that shit good, much less clever? It doesn't make you think, I'm not saying be radiohead but shit even the jockiest foo fighter song has some poetic license.

I hate them because they are generic. They are so formulaic that their songs all sound the same, as proven on youtube. I hate that people think they are into rock because of Nickelback. I hate that there are so many very talented bands who can play more than one song over and over again yet all the radio plays is Nickelback.

I hate them because they are generic. Did I say that already?

1. overplayed, cliched music
2. Chad kroger = douche
3. terrible lyrics

just not a fan but i gotta give them credit that they can always put out hits
we can call them terrible (deservingly so) all we want, but in the end they r millionares n we r just wastin time bloggin about them... but they still suck

I'm kinda the same way. I seldom listen to regular radio anymore. And I'm the first to admit that corporate radio plays the fuck out of stuff like "Rock Star" and that kind of stuff. Drives it into your head like a ballpeen hammer. And I'm also the first to admit that "something in your mouth" thing was total shit.

I guess that's what I'm saying. They do some stuff I really like, that makes me think, or speaks to something I'm going through at that moment. "Bad Girlfriend" (OK, not Nickelback, but it might as well have been) came out when my ex-GF was cheating on me, serially, and really throwing it up in my face. She made a point of always making sure it was in the cd player in her car...fucking cunt...I'm not bitter, tho...ask anyone. But when I heard the whole album, I gravitated toward "Never Meant to Be", and laugh if you will, it helped to let me know I had to get out before I went insane. Sure, it's fairly simplistic stuff, but it spoke to me.

My current GF and I really like "Gotta Be Somebody". It kind of puts into words the way we feel about each other, and our history before we were together. Again, fairly simplistic, but there's something there that talks to me. There's been a lot of death around me the last year or so, and "If today was your last day" says something to me. Heavy handed, fairly simplistic, but it makes me think. It reminds me of a universal truth that we all sometimes forget until it kicks us in the metaphorical nutsack.

I guess my thing is that Nickelback (and Theory and all the others that sound like Nickelback clones) aren't Radiohead, or Savatage, or U2, or Pink Floyd. There are only a few truly groundbreaking acts that come around. That's what makes them groundbreaking. But fuck, people. They're not Warrant or Poison, either. They're a simple little rock band that apparently sells an assload of units.

I can't believe I've spent the weekendend defending Nickelfuckingback. M&M's are a helluva drug.

^^^ If it helps, I don't see it as a 'defense' of Nickelback, but an understanding of 'hate', (a word my kids can't use btw).
I listen to no commercial radio, and haven't for years; and that not controlled by me are XM/Sirius oddball channels so maybe that's why I'm not as affected.

Because they are successful at mailing it in. Nothing about their music is original. They sound like dozens of other bands you hear on the radio. Bands like them, Seether, Theory of a Deadman, Shinedown, etc etc... if you took someone who hadn't heard any of them ever before, made a mix CD of several of each of these bands' songs and gave it to them, they'd think it was the same band. It's unoriginal drivel. They simply use the same beats and riffs to make the same fucking songs over and over again.

They have no creativity or talent. They are successful because they pander to a retarded audience that likes songs about chicks and beer and rocking and rolling in the free world. they are everything that is wrong with music. They are redneck Gods. They just rinse and repeat their songs...

Agreed, three times over.

I was in a McDonalds the other day, and my stuff came out to $4.95. I hand the guy a five and he asks "Hey, do you like shitty bands?" I asked him what the hell he was talking about, to which he responded "Well, here's your Nickleback!"

I've heard that joke before, but it took some 16 year old punk to make me realize that in my lifetime, that lame joke has brought me more entertainment than anything that Nickleback has put out.

On a somewhat related note, the Bloomington Bros (sketch comedy group) have a parody of "Photograph" that made its way around the internet awhile back. Forgive me if you've already seen it, but if you haven't it's worth a listen:

From a purely musical POV; I don't hate them?I'm just not impressed by them and all of the music that considers itself rock and roll today.

From a personal POV; I don't like music that sounds like the singer is trying to squeeze out a big duce.
