This was after a headbutt separation. The referee had not motioned for them to begin fighting again if I remember correctly. However, the first punch should have woken Ortiz up that Mayweather was ready to fight. And besides, if it's during the fight during a round, the rules do say "protect yourself at all times."

I saw the headbutt and the ref seemed to be walking away when Mayweather hit him. I just wanted to make sure he hit him in 'live play' as it were.

That's kind of up for debate. I think he really should have waited for the ref to tell him to begin again. Then again, Floyd also should have been waiting in a neutral corner while the ref handled things. The funniest part was Floyd afterward getting smart with Larry Merchant, who told him he'd kick his ass if he were 40 years younger, LOL.

bad sportsmanship, but as SRD said, always protect yourself in the ring. It's the refs fault for not making Gayweather go to a neutral corner.

It's definitely bad sportsmanship, but I don't know that I totally blame Floyd. I watched the clip again and touching gloves is cool, but dude tried to hug Floyd right after headbutting him. Fuck that shit.

100% the refs fault. the fight was ongoing and therefore made the hit legal. if the ref didnt want it to happen he shouldve sent them to neutral corners or stood between. instead he allowed the fight to continue. BUT.....

if floyd wants everyone to think of him as the greatest of all-time he shouldn't have had to sink to that level. he was completely outclassing ortiz and would've taken him out anyways. while it was a legal move it was a dirty move but after the headbutt by ortiz i feel sorry for no one in this matter.

and i shouldn't even have to say it cause i'm sure everyone is thinking it but mayweather vs pac-man needs to happen now more than ever!!
