Slut?

I was inspired to start this thread by some comments in another about DrunkenStepgirl. I wonder what others think of the word 'slut', its definition, its stigma, its use from girls, its use from guys?

I know girls in high school who were tagged as sluts, and it ruined them emotionally. Other girls seemed to resent them just because of the tag, and not for anything that they'd actually done.

I know guys in school that will take a girl out, and tag her as a slut because she WOULDN'T give it up.

There are girls who willfully admit to being sluts, and find no problem with the tag at all and, in fact, enjoy the "liberation" it provides.

What are your views?

It totally depends on who says it and in what situations. I think any word said in anger or to be mean can be hurtful. Its hard to be a woman when it comes to sex...if you enjoy it too much you're a slut or a whore. If you don't you're a prude or uptight.

Maybe not THAT bad. I would say whore is more of the N word for chicks but they are both bad.

I just wish more girls would embrace their "inner" slut and go with what they want :)

Since my name had to be brought up in a thread about sluts, i figured id throw my opinion out there.
If you are a slut it probably bothers you. or if you are a lesbo feminist who cries for other women who are mistreated by big, mean men.
I could give a fuck... why? cause i am not a slut. so call me one, ill laugh.
the girls that freak are the ones that deep down kinda know they are sluts cause they banged three guys from their friends band or like to get drunk at parties and blow guys in the bushes for dollars, then they get all hyper sensitive when you tell them how it is. sluts. you know you are....
and while we are on the subject i had this guy that i used to mess around with, and like the third time we were in bed together he starts busting out with the whole "you know you are a dirty slut.. blah blah". it so didnt turn me on. i went along with it cause im nice but he thought it like turned me on or something and it soooo didnt. so watch that one guys.
and slut is not the *N* word for girls. Cunt is. call a bitch a cunt, they love it.

If i'm with a guy and we are getting into some rough sex (which i love BTW) then i dont mind if he calls me a slut because in my fantasy, i am.

So to be called it and treated that way in "certain" situations is kind fun.

but in general i would say that you only care about the word if you value the opinion of theperson calling you a slut. Like your mom or dad for instance.

Alright, without being to much of a feminist (or trying not to be anyways) I'm gonna explain my thoughts on this word. For the most part, I hate the use of it and here's why.

When someone, be it man or women, wishes to speak about a women in a deragatory way, I would say 80% of the time they choose this word (or whore) to describe said feelings about that women (whether she participates in such behavior or not or not is usually irrelevant)

Now, my problem with this is the fact that society, as whole, will more often then not use a women's sexuality as a means to demean or humiliate her, ie: if someone wishes to insult a female, the first insult that leaps to mind is that of using her sexuality against her, in the form of that sexuality being wrong, or negative.

This does not happen to men (that I can think of, anyways), nor can I think of any word which accurately represents for a man what "slut" does for a women.

That's my two cents.

for instance - If a Homeless person you didnt know came up to you and called you a failure you would laugh it off. If a friend or boss came up and said the same thing it would have a different effect on you.
